Thomas Preston & Elizabeth Armstrong

Born in 1824 in Manchester, England.

Sailed to NZ aboard the Cornwall in 1851. 

Took up land in Styx, Christchurch (where Redwoods Motel is now situated). 

Married Elizabeth Armstrong

Had children Ellen (1852), Mary (1853), William (1856), John (1860), Fanny (1862) and Thomas (1865).

Served for a time on the Canterbury Roads Board.  Later divided land up among his children. 

Youngest son Thomas Herbert took up residence in Preston House, which still stands opposite the Motel.

Died in 1884
