William George Gallot & Mary Ann ConwayThe eldest son of Jane and William was honoured with the name of his father, a common practice for parents of the time. Born on October 22 1865 and baptised on 3 December 1965, William went on to become a bootmaker. Present at his baptism was Capt. William Jones and Ellen Hart (ref JFL 935/8/72). William is listed in the Wise’s directories around 1890 as a bootmaker, residing in Drake St, Auckland. On April 28 1887, William II, married Roman Catholic, Mary Ann Conway, moved to 2 Adelade St, and had a son, Lawrence and a daughter, Bella. Mary was the daughter of James and Ellen Conway of Freemans Bay. William died 24 July 1923, aged 59 years. He was an early addition to the Hillsborough cemetery and his grave was not marked. There is however a grave near to the front of the cemetery that bares only a small footstone, inscribed, ‘Bill’. It seems likely that this is where William George Gallot lies. Mary Ann died on 30 September 1949 aged 84 years, at the family home and was buried in Waikumete cemetary (ref C/9/17) |
